New Year New You!

As unemployment figures continue to rise those with uncertain job prospects in the West Midlands are being urged to treat the new year as a chance to make a new start.

Advisers at careers service nextstep West Midlands have offered reassurance that a wealth of information and advice is available to help people through the difficult times.

And they have underlined the importance that people facing redundancy should arm themselves with as much information as possible about their future options.

The free service, which is available at venues throughout the region, offers face-to-face support on employment, training and learning to help people aged over 20 improve skills and job prospects.

Qualified advisers can give practical help on completing CVs, application forms, job searching and interview skills. They can also guide clients towards new career and training opportunities.

Rachel Harrison, from nextstep West Midlands, said: “Ever since the recession hit the number of enquiries we have received from people facing redundancy has increased quite markedly.

“We are seeing the impact of the economic downturn across almost every sector, but we strongly urge people to try not to panic.

“People affected can be reassured that they do not have to face these worrying times alone, there is a huge range of support available to help with finding alternative employment, or even initiating a change of career through training and learning.

“We are working closely with Jobcentre Plus and other agencies to offer assistance during these difficult times and we advise anyone who needs support to contact us or visit one of our local venues.”
